Through a partnership between the Boston Parks and Recreation Department and Friends of the Myrtle Street Playground, the Beacon Hill play area is receiving an approximately $75,000 makeover.
Friends group board member Tara Gohlmann said the project entails constructing a permanent playhouse at the location, as well as installing new “rubber safety surfacing” on the floor of the playground to replace existing sand and woodchips. Other work includes repainting the asphalt and replacing plantings on Myrtle Street. Construction is expected to be completed by Sept. 9, weather permitting, Gohlmann said.
More than 100 local individuals and businesses pitched in to help the Friends group raise its portion of the construction cost. “It’s a huge win because we got so many people to be a part of it,” Gohlmann said.
Gohlmann credited City Councilor Mike Ross for helping to facilitate the renovations while Ross was quick to commend the Friends group for making the project possible.
“The Friends have already done a great job of programming at the space, as well as keeping it clean and vibrant,” Ross said. “Their partnership allowed the city to stretch scarce dollars even further.”
Meanwhile, Parks and Recreation Department spokesperson Jacque Goddard said, “Mayor Menino called the Friends group a ‘model partner’ because of the energy and hard work they put in to making the Myrtle Street Playground a wonderful public space. He truly values their enthusiasm and input.”
