Perhaps the most famous dog on what is as touted as the most photographed street in the U.S. died Dec. 5.
Callie, a 9-year-old golden retriever belonging to Joe and Kristin Casey of Acorn Street, apparently passed in her sleep.
“She died peacefully and restfully,” Kristin said. “She was such a graceful dog.”
Callie came into prominence on Instagram as users of the social-media site began submitting photos depicting her seemingly ubiquitous presence on Acorn Street. She was frequently photographed by neighbors and tourists alike, and ultimately earned the status of Internet sensation as the images were disseminated online.
“People loved her like she was their own dog,” Kristin said. “She really was a neighborhood dog, not just our family dog.”
The Casey family has received an outpouring of sympathy from the Instagram community and tneighborhood, with strangers leaving flowers on their doorstep and sympathy cards in their mailbox.
“She was truly a unique and special dog,” Kristin said. “We miss her terribly, and our hearts go out to everyone else who has felt her loss.”
