Villa Mexico Café came one step closer to finding a new home in the neighborhood Wednesday when the Beacon Hill Civic Association (BHCA) Zoning and Licensing Committee voted not to oppose the restaurant’s proposed move to another Cambridge Street location.

Owners Julie King and her daughter, Betsy, intend to relocate the business to the street-level of a building at 309 Cambridge St., located between The Liberty Hotel and the Charles MGH Museum. In addition to take-out, the restaurant will offer indoor seating for 19 customers, Julie said.

Villa Mexico will soon lose its home of more than five years in Grampy’s gas station at 296 Cambridge St., which is slated to be redeveloped into a residential building.

In another matter, the committee also voted not to oppose a plan to convert a street-level storefront at 12 Grove St. into a 300-square-foot studio apartment.

The Grove Street space was proposed as a new location for Villa Mexico until the city’s Zoning Board of Appeals voted to deny the application in May.

Meanwhile, the committee voted not to request the transfer of common victualler and take-out licenses for the Derne Street Deli at 16 Derne St. to the new owners, who also operate the Village Kitchen in Cambridge’s Huron Square.

The new owners said they plan to adopt a menu similar to the Cambridge eatery and eventually change the Derne Street restaurant’s name to the “Village Kitchen Deli.”
