Public Garden Rated Among Top Parks

Readers using the TripAdvisor Web site have just ranked the top 10 public parks in the United States, and the Boston Public Garden is ranked seventh.

The site has posted some of the comments made by those who participated in the survey and the comments about the Public Garden include: “a gorgeous setting”; “very well-landscaped and maintained”; “very pretty to walk through for a leisurely stroll with friends” and “a beautiful place to sit, relax, reflect or just people watch. The grounds are impeccably kept.”

The site features reviews and advice on travel destinations, hotels, resorts, flights, vacation packages, travel guides, and other information for members of the public taking trips.

Mayor Thomas M. Menino says he is pleased but not surprised that the Public Garden is receiving national recognition.

“I’ve often seen people who look like they are entering the property for the first time and it is obvious that they soon are overwhelmed with the beauty of the landscape,” the mayor said.  “The Public Garden draws people in because of its many pretty features, the willow trees around the lagoon, the swan boats gliding across the water, the lovely flowers in bloom, and the many shaded areas where a person can sit and feel removed from the rush of the city around the park.”

The 24-acre Public Garden is part of the Emerald Necklace park system in Boston and is bordered by Charles, Beacon, Arlingtonand Boylston streets.  The property includes the Public Garden Lagoon, walking paths, the “Make Way For Ducklings” statues, fountains, flower beds, a signature suspension bridge erected in 1867 and hundreds of varieties of trees.

The Boston Public Garden was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1987.

Residents of the city this year are being asked to offer their own opinions about the Public Garden and other parks in Boston via the Open Space Survey being done by the Boston Parks and Recreation Department.  Survey information can be found in many public buildings  and also on the City of Boston Web site at this link http://www.cityofboston.gov/parks/about/questionnaire.asp.
