While A Room with a Vieux has closed its Charles Street and Brookline showrooms after more than 30 years as a leading importer and dealer of high-end French antiques, collectors will have the opportunity to bid on its extensive inventory during a one-day, unreserved auction on Saturday, April 26.
Grogan and Company, Fine Art Auctioneers and Appraisers of Dedham will sell off more than 700 lots of French furniture and decorative works at that time. The inventory includes more than 30 armoires, 20 marble top commodes, 40 cabinets, 70 tables, 30 carved giltwood mirrors, 50 chandeliers and sconces, and 50 beds, as well as a selection of seating including settees, canapés. bergeres and fauteuils. A large assortment of decorative art features ormolu-mounted marble cassolettes, desk accessories, floor lamps and lamp bases, fireplace accessories, cast iron hall trees, garden sculptures and porcelain inset stoves.
Auction highlights include an impressive French Louis XVI- style, finely carved, walnut, dome-top armoire with a mirrored center-door, bronze candelabra and side cabinets, valued at between $10,000 and $20,000, as well as a Louis XVI-style, fruitwood, marquetry inlaid and ormolu mounted two-part Vitrine top cabinet, estimated at between $5,000 and $10,000. The auction also features a Napoleon III-style, marquetry inlaid and ormolu-mounted Meuble d’Appui, estimated at between $5,000 and $10,000.
Among the more unusual items to hit the auction block are an iron birdcage, standing more than 8 feet tall; a winged figural-lamp that was used as a prop in a 20th century French opera; and a mid-century Italian Quadrifoglio Art 4000 Guzzini lamp that appeared in the 2013 film “American Hustle.”
“I have never stopped feeding my addiction for the very best in French decorative objects and furniture,” said Jeff Diamond, who owned and operated A Room With A Vieux Antiques with Ellen Nadler. “My quest has led me to continue to import quality antique pieces over the last few months. Consequently, my current antique inventory is valued in the multi-million dollar vicinity.”
Diamond will continue to operate Restorers without Borders, a Brookline-based furniture-restoration business specializing in the repair and restoration of all styles of new, vintage and antique furniture.
The auction and exhibition will take place at Grogan and Company’s gallery, located at 22 Harris St. in Dedham. The exhibition is open to the public from Monday, April 21, through Friday, April 25, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. The gallery will be open for preview at 9 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, with the auction beginning promptly at 10 a.m.
