Hill Voters Back Coakley for Gov.

While GOP Charlie Baker narrowly edged out Martha Coakley in last Tuesday’s state election, Beacon Hill voters backed his Democratic rival in the gubernatorial race.

According to the city’s unofficial election results, approximately 49 percent of voters in 3, Precinct 6 and Ward 5, Precincts 3, 4, 5 and 11 supported Coakley, the state’s outgoing attorney general, while Baker, a former health-care executive, trailed with 48 percent. Citywide, Coakley garnered 66 percent of the ballot while Baker received 30 percent in the five-way election.

Meanwhile, 68 percent of Hill voters backed Democrat Edward J. Markey in his successful bid for reelection in the race for U.S. Senate as Republican Brian J. Herr, a businessman and former Hopkinton selectman, trailed with 31 percent. Citywide, Markey received 81 percent of the vote while Herr trailed with 19 percent.
