Mayfair on the Hill gets in holiday spirit with gift drive

With help from neighbors, Mayfair on the Hill is doing its part to make this holiday season brighter for patients at MassGeneral Hospital for Children.

The salon, located at 81a West Cedar St., will hold its eighth annual gift drive for children in need on Tuesday, Dec. 7, from 5:30 to 7 p.m., featuring complimentary wine and cheese for guests. This year, Mayfair on the Hill owner Claire Torpey has opted to give all donations to Angels Above, a charity that provides support to critically and chronically ill children at MGH and their families.

Donations being sought for the gift drive include tickets to museums, aquariums, sporting events, movies, etc.; gift certificates to Burger King, McDonald’s, Dunkin’ Donuts, Wal-Mart, Target, Shaws, etc.; new DVD releases; non-violent video games for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii systems; lullaby CDs; arts-and-crafts supplies; board games and puzzles; and cases of soda, water, juice and individually packaged “kid-friendly” food.

Sacha Field, a child life specialist at MassGeneral Hospital for Children, said Mayfair on the Hill’s effort is especially appreciated in the current economic climate.

“We haven’t received as many donations…because the economy has been so tough,” Field said. “It’s really nice when people get in the holidays spirit, and even a few small toys can make a big difference.”
