Barbara Bush, who passed away last week at the age of 92, was both a throwback to a time when a woman was expected to sacrifice her career for her husband and family and a trailblazer for the manner in which she led the life she chose.
Mrs. Bush, who was the only woman, other than Abigail Adams, to be both the wife and mother of a president, was respected by Americans of all ages and from all walks of life, regardless of political leanings — a feat that can be said of very few who have stood on the public stage in our country during the past 40 years.
Mrs. Bush exemplified what it means to have grace and dignity amidst partisan divides. She was known for her straight talk and lack of pretension and exhibited a degree of compassion and common-sense that transcended politics.
Barbara Bush served as an inspiration to all of us as a spouse, parent, and fellow human being. May she rest in peace.
