State Rep. Aaron Michlewitz, who represents the North End, Bay Village, South End and Chinatown, announced that he is endorsing Josh Zakim in his campaign for the Democratic nomination for Secretary of State.
“I truly believe that Josh’s progressive platform is exactly what the office needs to bring the state into the modern era,” said Michlewitz. “His focus is on making government more accessible for the people it serves, especially through increased voting rights, including Automatic Voter Registration, holding elections on weekends and expanded early voting.”
Michlewitz has served on Beacon Hill since 2009, where he now chairs the Financial Services Committee and has served as chair of the Election Laws Committee.
“Massachusetts has fallen embarrassingly behind on voter turnout over the years, and it is refreshing to have a candidate willing to make changes in the Secretary of State’s office to reverse this,” added Michlewitz, who championed Bilingual Ballots for Chinese and Vietnamese-Americans for Boston residents in state elections in 2014. “Voting is the easiest way to have your voice heard, and it is the responsibility of the Secretary of State to ensure that as many voices as possible are heard.”
“I’m thrilled to receive Aaron’s endorsement,” Zakim said. “We have worked together for years on city issues, and I look forward to working more with him to improve accessibility for voters, and to hear his ideas on how we can improve government transparency.
“The Secretary of State’s office is vital to every single person in Massachusetts, even if they don’t realize it,” Zakim added. “From eligible voters to business owners to investors to residents who simply want to know what is happening with their tax dollars, this is their office, and I will be fighting in their corner every day.”
