A coyote first spotted near the Frog Pond on Boston Common and later on the streets of Beacon Hill, was euthanized by Environmental Police in an alley off Pinckney Street, according to Lt. Gary Duncan, an official of the Environmental Police.

He said the coyote was badly injured and appeared sick.

“There was no choice but to put it down,” he said.

Coyotes can be of harm to dogs and cats and in rare instances in other parts of the Northeast, coyotes have been known to attack small children.

Massachusetts Environmental Police spent about two hours trying to find the coyote before finally tracking it down to the alley off Pinckney Street.

The coyote was shot and subsequently removed.
