Before launching his own company, Beacon Hill Properties Renovation & Maintenance – a full-service property management company that today oversees over 100 units around the neighborhood and also offers a wide range of services for the convenience of residents – Mick Thompson was already well established as a trusted and reliable handyman around Beacon Hill.
Thompson, now 38, grew up in Brighton and first found work as a landscaper on Beacon Hill at around age 16. He befriended a woman living in the neighborhood and then learned his job working in her backyard.
From there, Thompson began tending to the neighborhood’s flowerboxes and then working as a woodworker, rebuilding deteriorating flowerboxes.
Thompson landed a job painting four large units on Mount Vernon Street, which was a true gamechanger for him. The man who gave Thompson the job was well-known and respected around the neighborhood. He could have hired anyone to do it, but the man decided to go with Thompson because he trusted him.
“That job was a huge confidence-booster, and I used it as a steppingstone,” said Thompson, who soon also became a skilled carpenter along the way, while quickly gaining a reputation as a reliable handyman around the neighborhood.
With his expansive skill set, Thompson began managing numerous properties around the neighborhood, personally handling a variety of different projects. (Even today, Beacon Hill Properties Renovation & Maintenance only delegates work that can’t be performed in-house.)
Thompson officially established Beacon Hill Properties Renovation & Maintenance as a LLC about three years ago to help put the myriad services he offers under a single umbrella. On any given day, he and his team, which includes licensed plumbers and licensed technicians, might respond to a call for a leak, an electrical failure, a heating issue, storm damage, water intrusion, or some other unexpected property concern that arises.
Besides property management, including tenant placement, rent collection, and lease administration (all in full compliance with Boston rental laws), the company performs maintenance work and repairs, including in-house electrical, HVAC, roofing, and cleaning services, as well as performing building renovations and improvements.
Other services offered by the company include kitchen and bathroom renovations; historic brownstone restoration; appliance and systems upgrades; and capital improvement planning.
Property showcasing and property leasing are also offered by Beacon Hill Properties Renovation & Maintenance, which was voted best property management by locals three years in a row (2023-25).
Drs. Sam Spencer and Eric Wu, who have contracted Beacon Hill Properties for several different jobs in their West End home over the past year, including renovating their outdated bathrooms while addressing some ongoing plumbing problems, as well as rewiring their kitchen, count themselves among the company’s many satisfied customers.
“We are extremely happy and highly recommend Mick Thompson and Beacon Hill Properties Renovation & Maintenance,” they wrote in part. “Their team is professional, knowledgeable, and experienced in working with older buildings like ours. They handled permits, building requirements, and city inspections efficiently and professionally. We look forward to continuing to work with them on future projects in our home.”
Beacon Hill Properties Renovation & Maintenance also caters to what Thompson describes as a ‘niche market’ comprising Beacon Hill residents who are immediately in need of assistance with a task as small as picking up a package for them.
For one job, the company regularly checked in on a home when the owners were in Europe, just to make sure everything was okay.
“It’s really evolved to where I met the community’s needs,” said Thompson, speaking of the wide range of services the company now offers for the convenience of neighborhood residents.
During a two-and-a-half month work stoppage before striking waste management workers reached a deal with their employer Republic Services last September, Beacon Hill Properties Renovation & Maintenance implemented its own private trash pickup service for the neighborhood.
At the peak, some two dozen customers relied on the company to pick up their trash, and even today, two customers still rely on them for trash removal.
“We give them the ability to put out the trash when they want,” rather than only on designated trash days, said Thompson, in explaining why these customers have chosen to remain with his company, even after regular trash-removal service resumed in the neighborhood.
The company also offers paper-shredding services for two downtown legal offices, making pickups of documents from them both on a weekly basis for disposal.
For newcomers to the neighborhood, Beacon Hill Properties Renovation & Maintenance can offer them help finding a new home, along with a range of other assistance.
“Whether someone has called Beacon Hill home for 50 years, or is unpacking boxes for the very first time, our hope is that they know there is a dependable local company ready to help whenever the need arises,” said Thompson.”
Beacon Hill Properties Renovation & Maintenance is also a business that gives back to its neighborhood.
When some local foodbanks were running out of food to distribute, Beacon Hill Properties Renovation & Maintenance helped them pick up rations, and during the pandemic, the company also helped facilitate home visits so pharmacists could administer vaccines to some less-mobile residents in their own homes.
Above all else, Beacon Hill Properties Renovation & Maintenance remains committed to preserving, honoring, and respecting the historic neighborhood it serves.
“At the end of the day, our mission is simple – to protect homes, preserve one of Boston’s most historic neighborhoods, and provide the kind of reliable, responsive service that strengthens the community for generations to come,” said Thompson.
